Risk factors associated with vestibulocochlear nerve schwannoma: systematic review.

چکیده
UNLABELLED The vestibulocochlear nerve schwannoma (VS) is a benign tumor that stems from the edge of the Schwann s sheath. It is considered the most frequent intracranial benign tumor, of low lethality rate and unknown etiology. AIM to identify risk factors associated with VS. STUDY DESIGN systematic review. METHODS electronic search of studies using the following key words: 'risk', 'schwannoma', 'vestibular', 'neuroma' and 'acoustic'. All original articles on epidemiological studies published in Portuguese, English or Spanish describing measures of association were included. RESULTS twenty case-control studies were found, most of them published in the United States. The analysis of those studies shows educational level, household income, occupation, exposure to ionizing radiation and noise, allergic diseases as well as the use of both cellular and cordless phones as risk factors for the VS. CONCLUSION methodological limitations and lack of precision in the findings impose limits to definitive conclusions concerning those risk factors. The current study contributes with information which can subsidize decisions related to the methodology to be used, having in mind new investigations on risk factors for VS. Therefore, it is of great help for knowledge improvement in this field.

Oral Schwannoma: A Systematic Review of the Case Reports
Schwannomas are benign neoplasms with unknown etiology, which apparently arise from neural sheath Schwann cells. Intraoral schwannomas are solitary, slow-growing lesions occurring at different ages; these lesions are normally asymptomatic and in some cases, they are accompanied by pain and paresthesia if spotted in the intraosseous regions of the mandibles. Definitive diagnosis of schwannoma i...
متن کاملSchwannoma of the vestibulocochlear nerve presenting as isolated paroxysmal vertigo.
We report a patient with a schwannoma of the eighth cranial (vestibulocochlear) nerve who presented with isolated episodes of paroxysmal vertigo and positive Dix-Hallpike maneuver, and without the common features of hearing loss, disequilibrium and tinnitus. There are no previous reports of paroxysmal episodes of vertigo as the sole manifestation of schwannoma of the vestibulocochlear nerve. He...

Accessory nerve schwannoma are extremely rare. The preoperative consideration of this diagnosis will lead to appropriate surgical management with preservation of motor nerve function. In this article we review the literature and report a case treated successfully based on preoperative MRI findings.

A 37-year-old woman presented with an extremely rare large oculomotor schwannoma associated with acute hydrocephalus manifesting as semicoma and anisocoria. Brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumor in the oculomotor cistern. Cerebral angiography revealed separation of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) and superior cerebellar artery (SCA). The tumor was removed...
متن کاملGamma Knife radiosurgery for vestibular schwannoma: case report and review of the literature
Vestibular schwannomas, also called acoustic neuromas, are benign tumors of the vestibulocochlear nerve. Patients with these tumours almost always present with signs of hearing loss, and many also experience tinnitus, vertigo, and equilibrium problems. Following diagnosis with contrast enhanced MRI, patients may choose to observe the tumour with subsequent scans or seek active treatment in the ...
